HERITAGE experts from Unesco and other parts of the region will come together for a brainstorming session to revitalise the George Town World Heritage Site.
InvestPenang executive chairman Datuk Lee Kah Choon said they would take part in The Penang International Conference on Sustainable Cultural Development at G Hotel on Oct 8 and 9.
Lee, who is organising committee chairman, said Bangkok Unesco office’s programme specialist for culture Timothy Curtis, Mayor of Vigan City of the Philippines Eva Mari Medina and Professor of College of Innovation, Thammasat University in Thailand Dr Walter Jamieson would be involved.
Others are Japan national committee member of the Board of Directors of International Council on Monuments and Sites Prof Yoshifumi Muneta and Sri Lanka’s Galle Fort Hotel partner Karl Stein.
The conference is jointly organised by InvestPenang, Penang Development Corporation (PDC), Penang Municipal Council and the World Heritage Office.
“The Historic town of Vigan in Luzon (the Philippines), Hoi An Ancient Town in Quang Nam Province (Vietnam), and the Old Town of Galle (Sri Lanka) are Unesco World Heritage Sites.
“Heritage enthusiasts and the public can make a date with experts from these sites to learn from them at the event,” Lee told a press conference yesterday.
He said the conference would discuss George Town’s cultural development potential and conservation efforts and address the World Heritage Committee’s recommendations for the setting up of a comprehensive conservation plan.
“Participants will be taken on a tour of Penang’s heritage sites to give them hands-on experience as well as to engage them in the discussion of site issues.
“Parallel workshops will be held on the second day to discuss the building of integrated networks for sustainability in the areas of business cooperation, governance, information & marketing communications and creative environment,” he said.
